Installing a pet door in your home can be very helpful to give your beloved pet the freedom that he deserves. Your dog can use this door anytime he wishes to go in and out of your home without having to wait for you to open and hold the door for him. By slipping past through this passage, your dog can stay outside to play in the yard, answer the call of nature and go check out the person standing behind your front gate. When the heat or cold becomes unbearable outside or when your dog misses your company, he can get back into the house without having to resort to barking or howling loudly for you to come and fetch him back in.
The pet door also offers immense convenience for you. You won’t be interrupted in your household chores or in your sleep by your dog’s need to go outside or to be allowed in. Even if you are away at work, you won’t feel guilty imprisoning your dog inside the house or leaving him out in the open to brave the hot or chilly weather.
When buying a pet door, there are two types that you will find. There’s the manual and the electronic dog door. Both of these have typical rectangular shapes. The width of the door will usually be slightly wider than the breadth of the shoulders of your dog. As for the height, its level should be slightly above the shoulders of your pet.
Between these two types, the electronic dog door is highly preferred. This is because it is the most secure and will allow very specific entry of your pet only. You see, the manual door system operates in a way that the door can be simply pushed open by your dog by nudging it forward. It closes when its spring or magnet snaps back in place. If another animal is chasing your pet, it can also follow your dog inside the house.
With the electronic dog door, however, the door can only be opened when the electromagnetic signal coming from the dog’s collar approaches the sensor attached to it. It then snaps shut right after not allowing any other animal that attacks your pet to slip past through. The electronic type is also tamper-proof and can keep other intruders including burglars out. Since this door type can be closed tightly, it also prevents air leaks through it that can affect the heating or cooling system inside your home.
